Agency Workers Regulations

The Agency Workers Regulations are due to come into force on 1st October 2011 in the UK. Potentially, this could be the biggest shake up of the temporary, freelance and contracting markets for many years.

From 1st October 2011, all temporary workers will have a set of Day 1 rights, and then after 12 weeks will be entitled to the same rights as a comparable permanent member of staff.  This includes the right to equal pay, working hours, annual leave etc.

On the face of it, this sounds great news.  However, for lots of businesses that rely on temporary staff this could lead to increased costs, and therein lies the worry for the market. The fear is that this could lead to more short-term contracts to keep costs down, and less use of Contractors overall.

Here at Simplify Umbrella, we will be ensuring that our Contractors are kept fully informed with the changes and how it affects them, as well as working very closely with our partner Recruitment Agencies.
